DaddyMack's Reel WIP Models/ Workflows

Hi guys, I’m putting together a Zbrush/ Modeling reel to hit the bigger studios with here in Sydney. I am aiming at quality rather than quantity here so I’d really appreciate any advice you guys have for taking my these pieces to the next level.

All works will be rendered in Max/ Maya MR and I plan to show final base topology on all pieces. I currently have between 10 and 20 hrs/ week for this 8D

I am further developing my workflows to ensure efficiency and accuracy and I record every step of the process in Zbrush. I will be upping all my WIP and Workflow vids as soon as I can compile them

Here’s the first character from a scene I’m building. This creature started with no sketch or design base and has been developed over the last week. The scene will involve a few shots of an ogre of some sort attacking a few of these guys trying to steal the gems from their headpiece (gems not included yet)

This is the base mesh and first sketch sculpt

Then the first retopo and dev

and the current retopo and tooling status (4700 polys)

I’m pretty new to this workflow/ art style so any pointers or criticisms along the way will be greatly :+1:
Thanks for the lookin

Well, the fact that there was no initial design on this guy shows. To be blunt, he looks very thrown together. A lot of random parts, none of which seem to make sense. I know he is a fantasy creature, but he looks doodled and not very believable. If this is for a portfolio, you definately want to have a design to start with to show that you can take a 2D concept and make an acurate 3d model from it. In the industry you will probably never doodle any creature in Zbrush. That is done on paper by the concept guys. Just MHO.

Gaboon… Ouch!.. I agree that his umm lack of design is showing… It’s my first beastie and I’m still designing him as I sculpt so I hear ya… Most of the rest of my reel is being created from other artists works so I’m with you there too. This guy will appear as the antagonist against an ogre. I’ll make sure that the shots I use hilight only his strengths and skim over his weaknesses… Thanks for the blunt;) Sweet reel btw

decided to reshape the head a bit on this little critter… I wanted to give my ogre (yet to appear) a reason to hunt 'em. What do you think?..

The revised version looks awesome… Love the ruby gem over the forehead! :+1:

Hey, it looks very cool! :+1: :sunglasses: :+1:

okay the reworked parts (upperhead eye back tail) are looking pretty nice.
the next thing you should rework are definitly the hands and feet. its pretty hard to make a character with only 3 fingers and 3 toe claws believable.
i tried and i failed at it. you should also draw some concepts for them. i would also suggest working with nails imported from an other package as subtools.
that way u can give it better forms working the nail out of the finger.
the legs are definitly to thin at the knees and the feet seem to large.
you should continue the back part design it looks pretty promising.
cheers

SolidSnakexxx… Thanks, it’s definitely a step in the right direction

piz… Thanks, I’m trying…

Disco Stu… Thanks for the fresh eyes on this mate:) I had a good look at the hands and feet and am now happier with them both. The hands still need a lotta work but the feet seem to be going fine for now. I want to keep this piece 1 mesh aside from the gems for now but next time I’ll definitely be making any nails/ teeth seperately… Great tip

Here’s the current progress guys

Assymmetry! And dull those plates a bit on the back. They don’t look like they have been used ever. I’d expect he’d fall on his back a few times.

Love the design, kind of reminds me of Dark Crystal. It could give small children nightmares!

womball… Heyaa!! Been a long time… how you doing Womball? I plan to have 5 of these guys in the shot I’m doing so I’ll customise each one slightly differently with your suggestions… Cheers

Onto another chunk of my reel

A quick start here with some concept sketches for an animation on my reel. Hope you like, will take any criticisms I can get on these, I plan to do about 20 concepts but use under 10 for the animation. I’m sculpting these guys from the same base mesh as you can see in the vids, I plan to do a fairly complex morfing animation with lipsynch

And finally a quick test of the morfing

I want to push these designs further into believability so any insights you’ve got will go into their final sculpts… Thanks

Amazing style of characters, really unique, love them all!

Your vids are very inspiring…THANKS !!!

P@S

Yaaay!.. I got one star:D

Jason Belec… Thanks, I’m trying to tread the road less travelled

MonsterMachina… Sweet! Glad they can help someone

More soon

Hey great works here daddymack!

I’ll balance your rating with a 5 *

Don’t take that one star seriously! It was either a mistake or some jerk who didn’t even bother giving critique if he really thought of it that way! PS I also got a one star on my last thread lol and I know it don’t deserve that, may have been same person lol :P.

We all know this work is certainly not one star worthy lol.

Good job keep it up and keep em coming!

Darukin… lol, thanks for the stars mate… I don’t take 'em seriously hence the yaaay! Glad you like the sculpts

Here’s one of the next lot… Starting thought ‘external brain’
