da vinci grotesque head

hey guys,
this is a head i did, inspired by a da vinci sketch (which i cant find a pic of on the web but its in my book - Leonardo’s notebooks)

just started out as a quick model, then i thought why not texture him up a little. i did the bast mesh in maya, then detailed and textured in ZB, then rendered in mental ray, using MiSSS. still not quite happy with the eyes.
might give him the hat he has in the pic too. but here’s where its at.

yeah, that’s great
I like it a lot

Very nice modeling. painting and render. I can feel the deformed skull under the skin. Nice details too…:+1:

Well done!

Might I suggest adding some asymmetry to the face? Everyones face is asymmetrical to varying degrees - beautiful faces tend to be the most symmetrical, and ugly faces less symmetrical.

Wonderful piece.

really cool !

:sunglasses: :+1:

Very good. I also really like the short backlit hairs.

I’d say a very stylish head! And well done, I really like the sense of space to define the look of your character.

What a man!

Really nice work! Love the peach fuzz.

Very nice modeling i like it , you should put his eyes a bit darker
good job!

Looks very good! Looking forward to see more from it! :+1:

Great Sculpt. Where can I get that shader you used for MR? Looks great.

WOAW!
so many responses so quickly!
thanks a lot everyone!

rufus_w - i totally agree, i was gonna give him a slight smirk for the fianl pose, and thanks for pointing that out

shannon thomas - Uh, i got the shader through this link MISSS but for some reason, i dont think it works, but give it a try, the instructions for the installation are on the page, and it is a terrific shader!

will take this guy to the end now that i know there’s a lot of interest
thanks again!

Nice work, the loose skin looks great.
Im having trouble figuring out how there could actually be a functional jaw in there, but hell- thats what makes it fun!

as for the mi sss questions. 6.0 or 6.5 and higher come with maya, located with the mr shaders, for other versions its in the bonus section (or used to be) at the alias site. and all info you need for use should be easily found in a pdf @ lamrug.org

hey guys,
sorry the delay, been updating my system at home, so have a little more power now. but here’s a little update, i only got my new lisence for ZB about half an hour agon, and thought i would touch uo this guy. added a little asymmetry to him, although probably not that clear at this angle.

getting more of that troubled mind expression out now, and doing a skin test in ZB, think i might do final render in ZB now.

He’s coming along very nicely, Baker17… His eyes make him look thoughtful.
Great job on the wrinkles too. Can’t wait to see him finished.

Dickie

got inspired after looking at Kris costa and Rick bakers work and
added a little more detail round his eyes, and to the skin, and tried a different pose. im really busy with my thesis at the moment, and need to stard desiging my models for the implementation of it, so not sure if i’ll get time to spend on him again, although, im sure im gonna have one of those sleepless night sessions where i’ll be able to work on him, and add that hair like the maya render, and some eyebrows.

Hi HI, look’s likee a chinese guy mix with a chimps… or monkey…its initeresting to see new ideas in character concept,as you see!
But these time I study the forms and genes forms, intzeresting concept to mix something, like in the 60’s movies Antman, or The fly, etc, more complex shape of insects… Great design anyway…
