I am trying to set up a customised the UI in R8, following the tutorial. Every time I drag a brush to the lower tray the latest brush type changes all the previous ones to the same one.
Any ideas please?

you can’t drag the brush you currently have selected down there.
try making sure you always have the Standard brush selected when you actually drag your icon down.
Simple when you know the details, its one of my frustrations with the online tutorials, is the dont mention the obvious sometimes. Would have been good to mention the very point you explained. Onward and …
