Custom UI buttons vanish after subtool deletion

Hello! I’ve been wrestling with an issue through the last four or five zbrush versions. I at first thought it may just be a bug with a given version, but its happened for me with each release since at least 2018, which leads me to think something else may be off.

I prefer to put a lot of common functions on the UI and in hotkeyable menus - however there is an issue I encounter 10+ times a day which causes me to stop what I’m doing and restart zbrush. Many, but not all, buttons dragged onto the UI from menus disappear after I delete a subtool, then switch to another subtool. This seems to happen consistently for me.

I’ve lived with it for years, each time thinking the next version of zbrush should resolve it, but would like to finally get this fixed. Is there a chance that something in what is being stored in my custom UI file is creating this issue? That could explain why its persisted through each release.

I can’t seem to attach the config files to this thread, but here is a link (two configs, one for wide screen monitor): https://drive.google.com/file/d/10JkCfba_dk62ACGHhCcn8xIgRAt5GcfT/view?usp=sharing

Thanks in advance. Whomever helps me fix this will be my hero.

I got a kind of a workaround.
Doesn’t always work, but it made the issue a lot more bearable.

It seams that the main soure of the problem is that ZBrush loads the default UI, and then the user custom UI on top of it.

What I did is I saved my custom UI, as a default UI. You can do it by, normally using the ZBrush save custom UI button and then navigating to your ZBrush instalation folder/ZData and overwriting the UIstandard.cfg file.
Then you can assign a hotkey to a restore standard UI button (under preferences menu), or you can simply put it somewhere on your UI.

I also like to have enable customize somewhere on my UI. CtrlAltTapping with this mode on usualy fixes most not working buttons. Those that you can see but not click. Also sometimes when there is only one or two elements missimg I’ll just redrag them quickly.

Another thing is that ZBrush doesn’t like to start without a project loading. Start ZBrush by opening your last project rather than just starting the application and then opening the file.

I know this is not a fix. This is a bug and only devs can fix it. But I hope that helps.

Apologies that I did not reply to this. I appreciate it, and will give it a shot. Fingers crossed!

Hope you are doing well during Covid, thanks again for the tip.
