Curve mode questions

Greetings,

I’m new to ZB and have a simple question that I found no answer for on the internet not the ZB documentation. It’s probably so simple that you will laugh, but how does one get the curve mode to work with brushes? All the tuts just say activate curve mode, draw the spline and the selected brush will follow the path. Uh huh. Btw, using ZB 4R7.

I have a sphere in edit mode, and just to be sure, I use the standard brush to raise some squiggles on it. Then I go to the stroke menu and enable curve mode with snap turned on. So now when I got to the sphere and draw out the spline, nothing happens other than the created spline shows up and just looks at me funny. I can move the spline, I can add to the spline, I can manipulate the spline, but I cannot make the selected standard brush do it’s thing along the path of the spline. Notice the spline is still giving me that look, just sitting pretty where I placed it. So I get no sculpt, just the sewing machine pattern of the spline on the sphere.

Second problem. When I chose a brush specifically designated curve brush, ie, curve tubes, I’m having issues with the spline not snapping to the sphere. Sometimes it sits right on the sphere, sometimes it starts on the sphere and ends in the air. This has to be a glitch, since the curve mode specifically has a button that says “snap” to surface, and it ain’t working right.

Any ideas on these two issues are greatly appreciated. I remember when I started learning Max a long time ago and had similar noob issues. After a while everything became clear and I laughed at myself for fumbling in the beginning.

Thanks

I’m no expert, but since there are no replies, I’ll give it a shot.

After drawing the spline, click on it. This will apply the stroke. Note that the size and depth will depen on the brush settings when you drew the spline. However, there are settings with the curve tool that make the stroke size and depth uniform and independent of the brush. To remove the spline, tap the model.

Regarding snapping, I suggest using one of the special curve brushes that are preset for surface modeling, although, I think that even with them, it is possible to pull the curve away from the surface.
