please any reason that could stop this feature from working?
You have to be in Move mode (W key). Ctrl+click on a polygroup will mask everything else. Ctrl+click on a blank part of canvas to reverse the selection and mask the polygroup that you clicked on. As far as I know, you could never just Ctrl+click on a polygroup to mask it.
