I did that drawing few mouths ago, and I decided to model him on zbrush!!
I made a base mesh on 3DMAX and worked on zbrush later…

Nice character idea. Really looks more like a lop ear bunny than a lion, but I guess lion sounds tougher. Of course he never met Rufus, the American Fuzzy Lop Rabbit that had some fame on the forum awhile back. 
Just teasing.
It would be nice to see the features more closely resembling the sketch though. I think that will turn out to be a better character and would show your abilities better.
