Hey everyone… this is my 2nd Zbrush project… the Creature from “The Thing” (1982 John Carpenter version, of course!). It started out as just an exercise practicing Zbrush, but soon turned into a full-fledged project. Before I knew it, I was rigging, animating etc. I got really inspired by the kick-ass work on Underworld and thought I could use this to attempt my own little transformation.
venomize,
Looks interisting, and weird! I’d love to see the clip! Can you post it ?
I worked on THE THING with Rob back in the day, and still dig that movie.
Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
~Mr.M
Nice animation. What program did you use for the rigging, etc.? I just started studying character setup in Maya, and it’s no small task. Your hard work paid off. Now let’s see a Husky’s haed split open like a banana (Lol). By the way, the Thing is still one of the best monster movies EVER.

You worked on “The Thing”!!! Wow… anyone who worked on that film is seriously my hero. One of my very favorite films… one of only a handful of TRULY scary movies. It’s timeless!
The clip is here: http://www.venomize.com/images/gallery/thing_web.mov
You just need to have Quicktime installed.

Thanks… glad you like it! Everything except the displacement & texturing was done in Maya. Actually, I did start off with the dog monster with tentacles that was in the cage, but migrated to the double-headed frozen creature at the beginning of the film. I’d like to go back and finish the other sometime.
this kicks butt dude… wow… good job on that…
your reels turning out to be one very christian themed reel huh?
Great!! “The Thing” was one of my favorite films too.
venomize,
WOW, COOL, WEIRD, AND IN CG. GOOD WORK, AND BIG THANKS FOR THE LINK. I WAS SO CURIOUS.
WELL WORTH YOUR EFFORTS!
STRANGE THOUGH, WHEN “THE THING” CAME OUT, IT WASN’T AS BIG HIT AS IT HAS BECOME OVER TIME. FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF IT. SO MUCH WORK NEVER MADE IT TO THE FINAL FILM. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TWO SOLID HOURS OF WEIRD TRANSFORMATIONS. AH… WELL. SIGH!
I APPRECIATE THE RESPONSE, AND KEEP US ALL UPDATED ON ANY OTHER WORK ON THAT WILL YOU?
~MR.M
really cool stuff here! nice job on it, i’m looking forward to seeing your reel
NO WAY there’s hours of lost transformation footage… Isn’t that the way of it. I worked with KNB on a flick called “Doppelganger”, and a 10 foot long hideous creature that took 12 of us to puppeteer ended up on the cutting room floor. If you watch the movie now(I wouldn’t advise it…) you would never guess that it was a monster movie at one point. It’s an honor to have you in the forum. Is it me or is having ZBrush like having every FX supply you could ever need? It’s a dream come true…Thanks again. I am just getting my feet wet with Maya and rigging, etc. In the mean time, I still have to figure out how to make the whole displacement map thing to work. I can’t even get the classic “Phone” project in the practical guide to work. I won’t back down, though…
Thats amazing! Great work. The Thing is one of my all time favorite movies. Its awesome to see someone take on modeling one of creatures.
Its hard to believe that that movie is almost 25 years old… I still think some of the special effects done with puppets then dont measure up to some of the cgi stuff out there today.
Id love to see a longer animation with some more morphing or maybe something with one of the dogs though… or possibly the final “thing” from the end of the movie.
Thanks! I’d love to do more sometime, and do them better the next time around. The great thing about the Thing is that it can pretty much be anything you want it to, hypothetically… the possibilities are endless. Although I preferred to try and keep it somewhat like the original.
I totally agree with you about effects work… sadly, practical creature effects are criminally underused these days. Personally, I believe you still can’t beat the real thing. I usually prefer the old-school practical stuff for foreground combined with CG shots for background elements and enhancements. They’re getting damn good though, and it’s only a matter of time though.
