Text can be created as 3D objects in ZBrush. There are a few ways to do it, but all require that you start with an alpha of the text. So you’d want to create the text in Photoshop first, as a 16-bit grayscale PSD image.
Once in ZBrush, you have several options:
- You could use Alpha>Make 3D to create a unified skin.
- You could apply the alpha to a plane (with plenty of polygons) as a mask and then use the Extract feature.
- You could take that same high-res plane and store a morph target. Then apply the alpha to the plane as a mask and use the Offset deformation to create depth for the text. Then you’d use Tool>Morph Target>CreateDiff Mesh to convert the change into a new tool.
Each technique yields different results. The exact method you want to use will depend upon the effect you’re going for.
