Creating single-mesh, armored character in ZBrush?

Hi!

I am working on a smaller game project and I’m not planning on featuring several sets of armor for each individual character. Because of this I feel it’d be badly optimized for a game to have several layers of different armor, all with inside faces to their meshes. I have taken a look at several character models used in games and they all seem to have just one mesh, with the pieces of armor more or less extruding from the mesh instead of having separate meshes for each piece of armor.

My question is: What method would you recommend for creating an armored character blend together in just one mesh?
