Creating hundreds of objects in Zbrush or Maya?

I have been away from Maya for quite sometime as I have been trying to learn the Zbrush workflow. Is there a way to create numerous random objects in zbrush without a major performance hit? Also, I used to know a way to do it in Maya but I cannot seem to remember what I did, or how I did it.

Examples: Random leaves, pebbles and rocks, several trees that make up a forest.

Next release will have something close. Possible in this version with tactical thinking and maybe a script or two.

Thanks Doug. After further research… I believe I used to instance geo in Maya using proxies.
