when i try to make a curve around my model the curve does not wrap around straight but a bit diagonal and i cannot find a way to fix this.

Be sure to disable Perspective mode if you haven’t.
Otherwise, the form of your mesh may be too complicated for this function for whatever reason. Instead, duplicate your mesh, clear all polygroups, and use the Slice Curve brush to slice through the mesh wherever you want your curve placed. Then use the Stroke> Curve Functions> Frame Mesh option set to polygroups to draw the curve where you want it.
