Crashing problem

Since using the new Zbrush 2, I have been crashing a lot more than I used to. And I can’t figure out any specific thing that is going on when this happens. Yesterday I had just changed the material and selected the brush to paint with and as soon as I put the brush to the canvas, I got an error message and was told Zbrush had to close. I am somewhat baffled by this and I would really appreciate any insight any of you may have regarding this problem. I can save my work frequently but that still doesn’t help the annoyance and frustration of the crashes. I have loads of memory and disk space so this shouldn’t be the problem.

I am using windows xp, pentium 4, CPU 240 GHz, 2.39 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, Paging file size 768MB, ATI Radeon 9000 Series.

Thanks

I’ve posted to several crash threads.
Both ZBrush versions are unusable on my system.
I wonder if the problems might be specific to hyperthreading P4’s. I’m running a 3.2 GHz on XP Pro.
Today I tried Z2 again, opened the program, default everything but memory settings, was only looking through the zoom drop-down functions and the program crashed. Hadn’t even drawn anything!

I have no idea what might be causing it…but Northstarr I would definitely up your ram if possible and set your mem settings in preferences to close to what you do have now…that might help til Pixologic could help ya.

Also write down any error messages you get, etc.

Thanks guys, it looks like Pixologic or any of those guys aren’t going to bother replying to my problem. Kind of disappointing as I was hoping they might know why ZB2 crashes on me when the previous versions did not, when nothing has changed on my end. I would still like some kind of response so I might know how to fix it.

 :frowning:

Well Northstar,

I recommend what I said above…definitely up your ram and set mem in preferences.

Also make sure you have a ton of disk space available.

I only have about 768mgs on mine and when I first started it crashed alot cuz I didn’t know what I was doing hahahhaaha …not that I do now but…

from reading the tutes, scripts and the site I have learned some of the things I was doing wrong.

I have learned to use the new hide option more efficiently, and the best doc size I can manage is 2048x2048 which I hit double/aa button while I work and that for some reason seems to help as well.

Oh yeah…I also noticed that when the mem gets loaded up and it slowwwwwwwwws down that saving all my stuff, reinitializing z or leaving the program and restarting it does not help at all…when it gets like that I must reboot my computer and then all’s well with the world till it loads up again. Pain in the ass? Definitely but I love this program and my computer is a half dead half rebuilt frankenstein so for me it is a small price to pay til I can afford a new one.

I hope you get some answers soon so you may Zaway blissfully.

Same problems here - p4 2.8 prescott. Random hangs - zbrush2 using exactly 50% of the CPU resources, will not come back after that, needs reboot. Only had it two days, and im getting properly hacked off with it. I take it from the above posts that theres absolutley no official response. brilliant.

tranimatronic (and anyone else who comments on this or any other troubleshooting issue), please provide your full system specs. The more information that we have, the better our chances of being able to find a good answer for you. Thanks.

When you’re working in Z2 is the Norton AV off???
I had problems using Max & found that it was the AV that was the problem, might be worth a try!!!

Thanks for the suggestion Buckie, I’ve tried running with NAV autoprotect disabled and it didn’t help.
I’ve tried disabling all hardware acceleration on the video card too, and several driver updates for the video card.
I run Z2 alone after fresh system start.
I am cursed!

sorry for the delay in the response.
The hang only seems to happen when using zspheres, once its turned to geometry it hasnt hung at all in the last few days.
I have Norton Antivirus too, which ive now removed from my system.
Machine spec is -

im going to get more ram this weekend, im thinking of going to 2gb and disabling the windows scratch disk altogether.
Thanks for any help

I’m crashing too ,but only in the proj master ,with the bump brush…very often…
xp home 1.7ghz /1 go ddrram /geforce3 :frowning: / 20Go free on the HD.

Well ,I’m pretty sure that’s not a matter of Ram ,The bump brush crashes even with a simple
sphere with a 512X512 texture…It’s very easy to reproduce …so …it’s a bug.

The bump brush is a known issue. Thanks!
