corrupted polygroups going down and up sub divisions! [Answered]

Hello,

If you look at the images below.
This is of a mesh that has about 5 subdivision levels.
The first image is at the highest level, the second is after I simply step down to the bottom level, and then back up to the top!

As you can see my polygrouping is all corrupted!
Any idea if this is a bug or something I have done?

Again all I did was step down subdivisions (using shift and d) all the way to the bottom one, and then used D to move all the way back up. That’s it!

This is in 4R7 though it happened in 4R6 too, and I was hoping it would be fixed by now. :frowning:

Check out your wireframe and it should make sense of what it’s doing.

High division polygroups don’t maintain on lower subdivision levels. Meaning if you go down in subdivision levels then the polygroups have to adjust to match the lower level polygon faces.

The best way to maintain what you’re looking for here is to retopo with the flow going along with your features. This will not only maintain your polygroups through high and low division levels but it will also help keep better edges for your hard level detail. Basically right now you’re going against the grain so to speak.

Ah! Ok, I thought that it would put the polygroups back to what was based on the top level, but it makes sense what you’re saying now.
Thought it might be a bug but I see it’s a “feature”.

Maybe we could have an option to “lock” polygroups to a subdivision level future or something.
In the mean time though, I’ll try not to move up and down levels with polygroups on.

Not sure I’d call it a ‘feature’.

I’m not sure why they made so it doesn’t work with polygroups but it does work fine with masking. There might be polygroup programming that prevents them from making it work that way. Kind of like how layers or subdivision levels prevent certain actions and tools from being used on the model.
