Correct displacement workflow

Hi Zbrush guys!

I hope some of you guys can enlighten me regarding how I can export a proper displacement from Zbrush via the Multi Map Exporter. The reason why I’m using the MME is so that I can export displacement with UDIM’s which to my knowledge is not possible with the built-in exporter.

So to make this example really clear:

  1. I’ve made a polygon cube in a third-party app and exported this as an OBJ-file.
  2. I import the OBJ-file into Zbrush and subdivide it several times until it starts looking like a sphere.
  3. I make two short strokes on the mesh, one where the mesh is pushed in, another where it is pushed out.
  4. I go over to the MME palette check Displacement, and set the export options as follows, it should look like this:

As you can see, 32-bit is turned ON, SubDiv level to 0 and Mid is set to 0 which should be a basic default setting.

  1. I export out the map and import the EXR displacement into Nuke for a closer look.

6. So what I’m expecting to see is is a value of 0 (zero) on the part of the mesh that is untouched. Positive values on the part that is pushed out and negative values on the parts that are pushed in.
But the result I get is different, all values in the map are inbetween 1.9 to 2.5.
In the image below I’ve intentionally exposed and gamma’ed down the map for you to se what is happening.

So what do I need to do, to get a correct map?
