Copyright/Crediting maker of assets

Hi there i know this a bit of a weird question to ask:

when using assets such as brushes , textures or alpha textures do you always need to credit the maker of the brushes, textures or alphas? . I am not talking about entire models or characters i am more talking about the assets used to make a character

I don’t have a problem with giving credit to other people its just that i don’t think i have a good understanding of the rules

a bit of a side question : is it better to use to make your own assets such as hair textures or would it be considered alright to use someone else asset they made for other people whilst you still give them credit/ use with it with their permission?

Thank you for reading

if it helps i am speaking about non profit uses such as portfolios and showreels

I can only give a general answer because different countries have different copyright laws but in my view there is no need to credit the makers of brushes, textures, alphas and so on unless the maker specifically says you should in their license (if they have one). Pixologic makes no such requirement for ZBrush.

There are clearly situations where it is a courtesy to acknowledge what software and other products you have used when making something, and it will always be of interest to other artists, but I really think that it is no more than that. It’s no different to artists using traditional media saying which pencils, paints or brushes they use - it’s interesting information to other professionals but there’s no requirement to do so.

oh i see what your saying you should credit people when you they simply ask for credit thats fair enough thank you very much for answering that.

another two questions but i probably already know to the answers to the first one: do i need to credit someone for brushes if i paid for/purchased them? and i am better off making my own brushes for something like hair or would be considered ok if i used a brush i got online with permission from the maker?
