copying Zstartup from 4.0 broke activation for 4.0r2? - Answered

hi,

so i wanted to get my custom ui so i copied over my 4.0 Zstartup folder to 4.0r2 (after backing up of course) but it seems to have de-activated 4r2.

is there a file from the 4r2 zstartup that i should copy over?

also - is what i’m trying to do the recommended way of trying to move my custom settings from one zb version to another?

thanks.

The custom UI from ZBrush 4 is not compatible with 4R2. There are some big changes in 4R2. You will need to build it from scratch.

When you do Web Activation, though, it should see that you’re on the same machine. In that case there’s a button to request a copy of the activation key, which generates a new one without counting a second time against your serial number.

hmmmmmm…

interesting. thanks for the info. will do.

i can definitely understand that from version to version, there could and would be big changes… but it is somewhat less than ideal that customizations become incompatible - especially within a single whole number version.

ideally, the interface customizations are abstracted enough (even to something like a text file) so that they can be easily transported from version to version… are there any plans for that level of compartmentalization?

at the very least, the customization info should have nothing to do with activation.

anyway, thanks much for the help.

P.S. actually, of somewhat greater concern is that when i restored the backup Zstartup that was already activated, when i launch zb, it’s telling me that i need to activate… and when i try to activate, it does NOT tell me that this is a duplicate installation and offer to resend the original activation - and my computer has not changed.

can the act of simply switching ZStartup cause that?

what should i do here? i should have one activate activation for r2 at work now since my home installation is dead and unactivated.

The UI should not cause you to lose your activation. Odds are that something else happened at the same general time so that the two items appeared related even though they aren’t.

All you need to do is what I described in my previous post. Do a new Web Activation. You should get a message telling you that ZBrush has already been activated on this machine. Click the button to request a copy of the activation key. The system will be recognizing that this is a computer that should already be activated, so it will then generate a new activation code without counting the machine against your serial number a second time.

ah thank you.

so the registration process proceeds pretty far before it tells you that this is a redundant activation. you do have to re-enter your serial but then it was as you said.

thanks much!
