Converting meshes

Hi there, guys.

Few questions for Z-brush gurus:

  1. Is there a way that I can use the slice curve brush to break a tool into more than one object apart from it being a DynaMesh object?
  2. But the real question is what is the proper way to convert something to a dynamesh without getting the pixellated lego-like mesh that results when I convert it? (I have the highest resolution selected and am using smoothing - but it’s still aliased).
  3. What is the best way to convert an imported OBJ that has triangular mesh to rectangular mesh? (Loosing minimum detail)

Thanks guys. Appreciate the help.

  1. Without dynamesh, SliceCurve can be used to create polygroups, which can then be split into subtools (Groupsplit). It doesn’t automatically fill in the new hole like dynamesh does however, so if you need it to be a solid volume you can just run Tools:Geometry: Close Holes after.

  2. Dynamesh’s result can depend on the scale of your model. If you don’t seem to be getting a good result from it, try running the tool through Tools: Deformation: Unify.

If you don’t want to change the scale of the tool, there could be the option of duplicating the subtool, dynameshing that, turn off dynamesh and subdivide it for more geometry, and then use project all to project the smoother form from the old subtool to the new one. Remesh+Project All can also be a substitute.

  1. Subdividing once should give an all-quad result (but may not be ideal for sculpting still). Three options that come to mind are:

  • Dynamesh+ it’s little project option
  • Remesh + Project All
  • Manually retopologize using a zsphere

Thanks. Much appreciated.
