Complicated Braided Leather Grip

Hi all,

I’ve been trying to figure out how to accurately model the braided grip of this scimitar, but can’t figure it out:

Can someone help, please?

Couple of ways off the top of my head.

method one: if you have another 3d program make a tapered cylinder and uwrap it from 0-1 space completely (that is the cylinder should fill the uv space completely. then in zbrush go to surface -> noise: edit -> noiseplug: edit -> weave -> pattern: herringbone. you’ll then have to change the x y or z angle.

method two: the other way would be to pop over to badking and grab a braid insert mesh brush and just use that.
