Completely Green Questions

I hope this is the right forum, because I am starting up ZBrush for the first time ever now and I was wondering as to what exactly I should do to get better.

I’ll obviously be following the “ZClassroom”, but in my experience, these 3D tutorial videos have never really given me the results I wanted, so I wanted to ask some questions here to make myself more comfortable.

Are there any pre-requisites for modelling in ZBrush? Do I need to be good at 3D modelling with Blender/3DSMax/etc? Maybe drawing?

What are some good hints for studying? What is the general “workflow” of 3D modelling?

What did YOU do to learn 3D?

The reason I ask is because I feel that I can easily get stuck in a place where I learn that I can “pull” a vertex or somehow “crease” something, but I lack the ability to do any of the stuff I actually want to do.

-Just start doing something. find your comfort zone first. is it people? animals? creatures? then start from there. you’ll be doing this for a while so it better be something that you’re really interested in. the goal is to get the feel and be comfortable with digital sculpting and 3d in general.

-each person learns differently. some likes these videos, some learn more by doing hands on work. whatever works for your brain. Personally, i learn more by experimentation. Then I feel dumb whenever I discover easier methods that smarter people use lol

-zbrush is super powerful now that you can do whatever you want directly from it. but it is still useful to know other 3d softwares. it depends on what your goals are. are you planning to work for studios later on? then learning other 3d programs is a must. you can learn them side by side.
-if there is a prerequisite, it is having a good sense of 3d space. i personally would recommend drawing a lot. drawing is extremely helpful for whatever visual art you want to do.

-start simple then build up.
-repetition is key.
-pick a subject and try to sculpt that for a specified time limit. let’s say a head in 2 hrs. do what you can within that time. you probably won’t finish it the first time. try the exact same head the next day within the same time limit. repeat until you are able to sculpt the head in 2 hrs.
-try to learn the basics first and be comfortable. you’ll stay here for a while. take your time. workflows will follow.

What did YOU do to learn 3D?

-i just started doing it then explored and developed skills along the way. you just really need to start somewhere.

-then learning 3d is actually not important for you and you’re not serious about it. because if you are, you will find a way to do what you want. asking questions here is a great start. whatever you have in mind, another artist probably already did something similar. online art communities are big nowadays. there is no more reason to not learn something or get stuck on something. it all depends on whether you are serious or not.

Bottomline, just start doing something.
Goodluck!
