Complete full featured Office suite with small footprint (FREE!)

Hi all!
http://www.openoffice.org/

the above link is to Open Office, an open source project…

it is best known in the Linux community, as a matter of fact most Linux distributions either come with this or STAR office (non-free), but they also have a PC version…

It is full featured office suite. It is compatible with documents generated in Microsoft office, and a few other popular applications.

The biggest reason I like it is because if the size! it is Microscopic compared to Microsoft office, and has some features that are not found in MS office…

I really like the WYSIWYG interface for making web pages.

it is also capable of creating and editing PDF acrobat documents (and the program loads almost instantly, acrobat commercial version takes about 45 seconds to open on my system)

well anyways, check out the website for the features list. you cant beat the price, plus it is a good, sound office suite.

here is the features list http://www.openoffice.org/product/index.html

Great for all you minimalists…

Plus it comes in 30 diffrent languages

Cross platform… and FREE!!!

It’s not bad. I have been using it for a few months to see if it replaces MS Office. It can but, in many ways, it is not as nice. It may have a smaller overall footprint as far as hard drive space is concerned, but it tends to use more system resources than Office does (you can check this by accessing the Window’s Task Manager). It is also slower to load than Office in most cases.

One thing that bugs me is documents from Word imported into Open Office usually do not import properly if they are anything other than plain text. Formatting can be off. It does export to PDF wonderfully (I’ll say that!) and it is FREE. Even so, I am sticking to MS Office for a variety of reasons, of which some are compatability, speed and a smaller footprint in memory.

The MS documents import fine into my copy of open office… both in the PC and Linux versions.

have you submitted a bug report, or tried re-installing it? your input might help fix the problem in future versions for people with same system configurations.

It is good to know that MS office has a smaller footprint in memory. Thanks for testing :)…

I produce a newsletter that has a graphical image at the top and a text box on the last page with address, email, etc. within it. The newsletter is formatted to fit on two pages only. When imported into OpenOffice it stretches to three pages.

OpenOffice is a great program for free, for sure.
