Comfortable workstation

Hi,

I know a lot of people in here use the cintiq, hence this post.

We bought few months ago a wacom cintiq and we are pretty satisfied about it. Unfortunately, I got serious ergonomic problems.

The first one is a strong pain (tendinitis?) under the shoulder (on the back, under the scapula), due to the unsuccessful attempts to organize my desktop in a comfortable way (elbows always in uncomfortable way, keyboard troublesome to reach…).

The second is a strong fatigue on the eyes due to the reflexion the cintiq is doing ; I have to either not put lights and get my eyes tired or have a huge glare that made it very difficult to see what is happening in there.

The cintiq is a great product, but because of those 2 points I try to use it as less as I can…
Hence I would appreciate if you can let me know about some ergonomic solutions (special desktop, monitor arms, asymmetrical lights)
Did you guys face similar problems and if yes how did you organize your desktops?

Thanks

I use a Cintiq and have had no problems so far. I am using the 20 WSX.

What resolution and refresh rate do you work at?

What elevation do you use it at? I tend to either have mine flat on the desk or elevated 45 degree +

As far as lighting goes have you thought about trying some lamps set on the floor so you don’t get the light shining directly on the cintiq but your room can still be well lit I am not sure if it will help any.

Sorry I can’t be more help with this.

its a hard question with out knowing how much space you have to play with.

for me i often use mine like the last poster, however when working for long periods i sit in a wide chair or bed if im at home and place the tablet on my lap to work (and use a pillow or two to distubute the weight)

as for the lighting issue try either anti glare sun glasses or a anti glare plastic sheet on the screen its self, as long as its not too thick the pen will still work fine. also a frosted lamp shade can defuse the light better and stop glare.

sorry i carn’t be of more help maybe a description of your current work space would help?

Thanks for taking the time to answer and sharing your experiences.
We have a cintiq 21ux, though I don’t think it make a big difference with the 20. I tryed the differents possibilities of elevation, and to put it more or less high on the desk.
My main problem is the left hand (I am right handed) wich has to remain on the keyboard for the shortcuts. Hence my left elbow is never well supported and I have to “hold the whole arm with my shoulder”, hence the pain…
I organized my desktop with books (!!!) for my elbows to be on the right height. It works fine for the right arm as I don’t move it very far from the screen and partly lay on the screen. but my left harm “levitate”…
Malc2304, I am really surprised that you don’t have such problem at all. I read of a guy who prefer to use a intuos instead of the cintiq to avoid such pain.
HD CG Addict, I actually have plenty of space. I thought about putting it on my laps, but the problem of reaching the keyboard will still be the same.

Edit:

I finally put a borad on top of books, and now my elbow are supported on the right height (so far). And I scotch-taped my keyboard on diagonal on the top left corner of my cintiq, where it is the more “natural” to access it.
It’s an experimental arrangement, but the best I found so far.
Still I am curious about how other people did, and e.g. if some people has any feedback with articulated arms ro if some people do have specially designed desks.

Thanks and regards

Ben
