Combining and slicing shapes?

Hi there,

What I’m trying to do is combine 3 shapes and trim the excess (sort of how in Illustrator you use the Pathfinder/trim command). The “Y” shape I have here is made up of 3 pieces that intersect, and if I merge and Dynamesh them (then smooth, flatten, etc.) I don’t get a clean result. I also thought I could create polygroups of each piece somehow and just select/hide/delete those “overhanging” parts, but I can’t get the polygroups to form that way (is there a manual way to do this?). Any strategies you guys could recommend? So for example, where the yellow polygroup pokes through the middle, I want that part removed (not the longer club-shaped part). I only want the club-shaped ends of each piece to remain.

Thanks in advance!

Lisa

Well, you could try to remove the overhanging parts before you do the merging with dynamesh. I simple trim curve could work OK to get whatever shape you want. Simply remember to get enough resolution in the dynamesh to get crisp edges, that you can always decimate later.
