Hey! On Glen Southers site, he has a gallery of images he created in “CLAY”. I haven’t heard of this one, and I can’t seem to find it anywhere. It sounds interesting! Anyone know who makes it? Or where I would find it? Thanks guys!
you can find this tool in the near future on [URL=http://www.rocket3d.com.i]http://www.rocket3d.com/ i really can wait to get this prog too.
Conceptors will back soon!
And soon is relative

With the 1.1 and character tool plugin released, Silo3d is rapidly evolving into a powerful app. While not completely free like wings3d it is still very cheap and seems to have a lot more momentum in terms of features and upgrades that the nevercenter guys are constantly adding.
They really listen to their users, much like Bjorng does with wings. Both apps are great at what they do. I’m shifting more over to Silo myself, simply because I like the customizable UI. Being able to create your own button pages and keybindings really allows you to nail down the workflow that is right for you.
gasp
Silo better then wings hu?
I HAVE to go check it out now.
Wasn’t interested at first but after reading these few posts…its worth another shot.
MTB: I can’t honestly say that silo is better than wings at this point. There are still a few things it lacks that wings has before it will be a rock solid modeler. But the Nevercenter guys are very open to suggestions and they’ve done an incredible job at implementing some of the better ideas. If they keep updating Silo the way they have been since the initial release I have no doubt that it will be one of the best polygon modelers out there in no time.
All I can suggest is that if you have ideas on how to make it better, by all means, post in their forums and you will be heard. That’s got to be the best way to get the modeling program that YOU want. Even in it’s current state, it’s well worth the hundred bucks IMO.
Sorry people,
I tried Silo and it sucked.
Again, depends on the way you work, and i’m too used to Wings now.
I was using Nendo before, so that may figure.
Does anyone as to whether IZWARE are still going?
They haven’t updated there site for time…

Heres the URL for the Izware>Mirai board.
You can check all the rumours there
Seems the only hard fact is that no-one has heard from Izware since 2001
If it comes out again I’d be keen to give Mirai a go, though the price tag would be pretty hefty.
Hey Bonecradle,
The price tag is as heavy as a pregnant woman…but it’s worth it.
I played with it for about 2 years and it showers down heavily on most packages like Maya and Max…
Depends what you want to do though.

Actually the price of Mirai is NOT worth it nowadays. I admit it is a very good program, but considering how far most of the other major packages have come, and how much cheaper they are getting, I’m hoping that if/when Izware does get back on track that they rethink their pricing and feature set.
I totally disagree with your blanket statement that a 100 dollar program like silo, with it’s configurability and toolset sucks. I’ve used a lot of modeling apps and for 100 bucks you’re getting more than your money’s worth compared to what is out there - pro packages included. I see potential where you seem to see “suckage” and rather than walk away from that I choose to help it evolve into a better tool - one where you don’t have to sell your first born on the black market in order to get what you want.
GWOT,
If you disagree, then maybe try Wings3d…it’s free.
Evolve away with Silo dude…I just don’t think it’s a patch on Wings…
Knew you’d be pleased.

The point of my post wasn’t to recommend one package over another - just alternatives. It should be up to the user to decide what is right for them. But saying something sucks is purely subjective, especially when you don’t provide a reason why. I could care less if you like it or not - just say why so others can benefit from your wisdom. =]
Read my posts. I HAVE used wings - still do in fact. Mirai and Nendo too. I’m just saying silo is worth checking out. The demo is free too. ;]
Anxiously awaiting Clay myself as well. Especially since it’s development seems so clouded in mystery. =D
Interesting read here, I haven’t really tried any of the modelers suggested in this thread in any meaningful way. But was curious if you use a stand alone modeler, how do you go about animating, or rendering? I can understand why a stand alone would be better at focusing on one thing, but does it benefit the production pipe all that much? Just curious.
Cheers,
Shawn
Hey Shawn, how goes it with your reel? =]
For me it comes down to the best tool for the job. Because of this I found it best to break my toolset down over several apps which all do pretty much only one thing, albeit really well.
For modeling I’ve been using wings, and recently even silo (probably moreso as the tool progresses). For UV mapping, morph targets and skinning I use Lightwave (currently considering Deep UV). For rigging and animation I use Motion Builder - though I’ll probably be using LW more often once 8 ships as they’ve added some amazing IK and dynamics tools.
I’ll also be adding Zbrush into my workflow once the next version ships - for texturing and normal map stuff. I don’t find it difficult at all to switch between apps, since it usually only involves an obj export or even a direct file feed from one app to another that supports it.
Ideally I’d love to settle down with just one app, but I have yet to see anything out there that suits my needs and workflow from start to finish. Mirai had some real potential and I considered it for awhile, but Izware seemed to be floundering so I looked for safer alternatives.
its time to talk : mirai was good but its years away - wings okay and its free but only for modelling-if you want a full cheap 3d prog check out the new Carrara 3 !
i am an old Truespace user but when i tried carrara i was hooked - it sso easy and also the new FAST renderer (non photorealistic, sketch, hdri, caustics) made me lucky - http://www.eovia.com/home.jsp
<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Clay is still in beta.
Why not check out Wings3d/// www.wings3d.com <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
id consider clay more like alpha, since its only version 0.22. and the application will go through a lot of facelifts before its out in the open. ( like working on the third revision of the undo buffer, and some database stuff to speed up object manipulation. )
there isnt much to say about clay, its very minimalistic. bloody stable. ( 1 crash within 1.5 years. and that was on an unstable version ( we had our warning ).
small in size, loads up instantly. and looks like silo. ( though personally im not a fan of silo except its viewport/manipulation speed. )
while silo and clay look alike, they act completely different. i wont go into details for obvious reasons.
the only downside is that the guy that codes it does it on his spare time, so progress is slow.
that said, ive been modelling in clay over mirai for a year now, so its got most of the tools that are really needed. ( i do miss a lot of the small menu trickery you could do in mirai though )

See that’s what I’m looking for, and why I’d love to be able to give Clay a try. Doesn’t sound like it’s very close to a release though
