Character Sculpt

Hey Zbrushers,

Here’s a quick WIP character sculpt I’m making for my portfolio. The base mesh topology is based on a generic low rez model from the excellent Gnomon DVD “Modeling the Human Head” by Kevin Hudson. In addition to sculpting the high res details, I’ve completely modified the shape and character of the head, but some features, such as the ears, owe a lot to the original topology. I know that modifying existing assets is a common practice in production, but I just want to be clear about what’s mine and what’s not.

Any feedback is welcome… I’m in the process of adding a finer level of detail to the skin. I’m not sure if I’ll go all the way and make textures, I may just leave it as a surface sculpt and take the next one further.

Nice. I would offer a few critiques. I don’t know what the original head looked like- but this head looks some where in between a caricature and realistic anatomy. It doesn’t look totally “real”, and at the same time it doesn’t look exaggerated enough to be an original design. What makes it look unreal is the almost spherical shape of the head, and the simplification of the cheek bone, chin, and ear area. I’m not saying make it more realistic- I like unrealistic and exaggerated work. If realism isn’t what you want- I would push the design just a little farther and exaggerate just a little more. The skin details look a little too strong- I would take them down a small amount. They look good- but are just a little heavy.

The lips are fine the way they are, and the nose is pretty good. This model is decent- and it has the potential of being better.

good luck

Hi Simon!

I like this, the modelling is great and the texture (especially on the lips) is superb.
My minor crit is that the ears seem to be less refined than the rest of the model - maybe you’ve not got around to them - they seem to lack correct shape and detail.

Nice work, keep it up!

Jit.

Thanks for you comments guys,

comic_craig: I agree, I think he’s a little more distorted than I’d intended. I was trying to differentiate the character from the original model and may have gone a bit too far. I’ll play with defining the areas you mention more realistically. Definitely the top of the head needs to be raised up a bit. I’m doing another pass on the skin, which I think will involve softening some of whats there and adding a layer of finer detail (pores, wrinkles etc.). Thanks muchly for the crits! BTW, some cool stuff on your website!

jit_gohil: Heh heh… you nailed it. Other than change the shape and placement, I haven’t done much to the ears at all. The ears and surrounding areas definitely need some love in my next pass. Thanks very much for your comments!
