Character - Newsie Boy

Hello all, this is my first post at ZBC :D. I just graduated from Vancouver Film School and finished my demo reel recently.

I am new to Zbrush and thought I would post and share the results of my first Zbrush model, the character in my demo reel.

I didn’t post the rest of my demo reel because the other models were not done in Zbrush, but if anyone is interested it’s here: http://www.sherrielaw.com/demoreel.php

Hope you guys like it.

very clean modeling-great character :+1: :+1:

just 555 stars!
awesome job

Hey really terrific work! Pretty smug little fella there. What method did you use to texture him?

great work!

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I’m such a new member all my posts are getting moderated before it shows up, so meh this one may not show up until monday?

The boy was modeled and unwrapped in XSI, then brought into Zbrush. All texturing done in Photoshop.

The model is pretty good! I like the weight it holds, and the posture shows a lot of character. One thing that may improve your model is a higher quality render, in another program if you have access to either 3DMax or Maya. Maybe play around with the lighting. Zbrush is great for a sample of light hitting form, but would be awesome with a better render program.

I’m glad you liked it :). Actually the textured version is rendered in XSI, I only slapped on some quick lighting since I only needed this to be a breakdown image to show the full character used in my demo reel. I put him into my environment with physical sky for the demo reel renders.

check out the link in my first post for my demo reel short.

Beautiful piece! The clothes are awesome. Great work!
I especially like the cap in combination with the boy´s blond hair and the dirt in his face and on his arm – looks really cute!

nice weight and pose and great subject  The only thing that’s really throwing me off is the way the neck bends at the base of the head - looks strange and unnatural. Other than that great - love the pants!

Congrats on finishing

Hi sherrielaw! That’s a beatiful sculpt! Love the cloth :+1: ! Agree with Intervain on the neck. Keep’ em coming! :+1: !

Thanks everyone for the comments. I agree about the problem with the neck… he is a rigged character so that is a skinning/weighting issue I have to fix when I have time.

Very nice

Nice Newsie!

wow, its very good. I love the dirt on the cheeks. Very clean mesh also. Great job.

ah yes the lovable chimny sweep. clean as a wistle sharp as a thisle best in all west Minston, yeah!!!

cool litle guy

I’m wondering if it’s possible for me to just change the post title to turn this into a sketchbook thread?

Anyway here are some more on the newsie. It was very important for me to get the fat volume on the face correct to make him feel more like a child, so I spent a lot of time on the face. I tried to make the face silhouette readable in every angle. Here are some detail images.

His hand was never shown up close in any shot, but I did it anyway for practice.

Awesome! I missed the link :stuck_out_tongue:

Excellent reel. A couple of friends of mine went to the Vancouver Film School. Some of them are taking a few years here at Sheridan now.

Really nice job with these. The overall form looks great and I like all of the details as well.
