Changing default material loaded with zbrush problem

Hi, I wasn’t sure if this should be posted here or in the thread below, but its a startup problem so I figured here? :o

Anyway, following this:
http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Changing_the_Default_Material
I want to change the default material loaded by zbrush from the red wax one to “MatCap White Cavity”. I have tried both just selecting this, painting it onto the canvas, then saving in the ZStartup folder, which didn’t work. Then I realised the tutorial says you have to load over the red wax material, so I found the MatCap White Cavity MatCap in the ZData folder, and loaded from there over the red wax, painted on canvas, saved at StartupDocument.zbr in ZStartup folder, and still, didn’t work :frowning:

Am I missing something? The only thing I can think of is that I don’t have ZBrush installed on my C: drive, but I highly doubt that would make any difference?

Thanks,

It is [COLOR="#FFFFFF"]SERIOUSLY not recommended to modify the contents of your ZData folder. Doing so can result in unpredictable and unwanted behavior.

I personally would simply modify the StartupZScript to select your desired material at launch.

Or create a Macro where you select the desired material and map it to a handy shortcut key. That way, any time you get the RedWax material, you just press your shortcut and it changes to what you prefer.

Ahh editing the StartUpZScript sounds promising, I’ll try that now. I’m not sure why this wasn’t working though.

I wasn’t editing the ZData folder, I just told ZBrush to load the default material from there (which it so nicely seems to have ignored time and time again). Anyway I’ll try to track down this startup script and see if I can just tell it to start with the white matcap material instead of that horrid (in my opinion of course :stuck_out_tongue: ) red wax matcap.

Thanks for the help ^^

Great! You mentioning start-up scripts I looked into it a bit and found a script by ‘TVeyes’ back in 2002 or something about making a script to do exactly this, and it works wonderfully

Just as a side note, I also wondered if telling ZBrush to load a new default mat in ZData was causing it to ignore it for some soft of stability, so I re-saved out that mat into ZStartup > Materials where I already have some custom ones installed, tried the process again, but still didn’t work. No idea what was going wrong then :stuck_out_tongue: but no problem now  Scrtips :+1:

Thanks again, much appreciated!
