Chaney Jr. Frankenstein

frankheadszb.jpg

Here’s my first try at sculpting a real person rather than just a creature. I did a head of Lon Chaney Jr. Then decided to add the make-up that he wore in GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN. I tried making the electrodes in his neck by doing an inverse mask on a round area and then moving that section out to form a cylinder shape. Tried to clean it up some but it still looks looks pretty sloppy. Is there a better way to add a smooth cylinder shape to a drawing while keeping it 3-D?

WOW your improving quickly!!! Nice Likeness!

Greg

When you do the mask, pull out the mesh for the bolt. Now invert the mask, this holds the end in position. Now add more mask arounf the neck base, leaving a little more area than the original mask did. Now use the smooth mode of the tool to literally pull polys from the neck area upto the bolt head. This will distribute the mesh better and allow you to deatial the bolt. Hope that is clear.

Jason - I appreciate the advice, but I’m not really grasping what you are saying. My knowledge of masking (and practically everything else except the basic draw and move tools) is pretty slim. Maybe after I’ve gone through more of the help resources I have I’ll be able to understand the technique you described. Thanks.

Maybe this is clearer and what I should have done.

Thanks, Jason. The pictures help a lot. Thanks for taking the time to do them.

Nice structure in the face :+1:

Wow that was fast, at this pace I will be asking you questions about Zbrush in about a week!!
Nice work.

Here’s phase two of my Chaney Frankenstein head. I’ve mainly been improving the likeness and adding details. I still haven’t gotten the hang of adding texture. I’ve also been experimenting with markers to add the bolt throuh the neck using a primative shape but haven’t quite figured that out yet either. I colored this one shiney black because with only a smooth surface, I thought it looked kind of cool this way. Comments?

Hey nice work, I dig that its chaney. I like your illustration work too, big fan of Basil and the book you worked on. Rather intimidating to see your moving on to 3d now, steppin it up a notch for all us hacks. haha
Seriously good job look forward to seeing more.

More work on my Chaney Frankenstein Monster. I managed to get the electrodes in his neck and I started playing with hair. It’s giving me a lot of trouble at this point. Not sure why the textures I add in projection master look good until I exit it. Then they seem to turn to mush. What am I missing?

Hey Kerry ,

Nice job, I think you may need to divide the model a couple more times ( if your computer can handle it), You need a lot of geometry to hold all the small details.

Kerry,

Very nice start on the Chaney Jr. likeness and your learning is progressing nicely as well.
I checked out your site and I have to say I enjoy your artwork.

I am seeing alot more guys with MUFX ties finding their way here. Have we met before?
Welcome  and enjoy Zbrushing!

A small victory for me that I actually got a texture to work in Projection Master. As Patton suggested, I needed to divide the geometry more. This is overdone, but has the basic skin look I was hoping for.

An odd problem I keep having is losing my contol buttons, Somtimes the draw or move buttons justr disappear. I have to restart the program to get them back. Is that a common glitch or does it indicate memory problems or is it something I’m doing? Anyone know?

Hey Kerry ,
Looks great!!

Sometimes when you hold down the Ctrl. key and click on a button you can drag it off of the interface by accident.
If that happens, just go up to the top tool bar and find the button you are missing in one of the drop down menus (Draw and Move are in The Transform Drop down) Hold down the Ctrl key and click and hold the left mouse button, and drag the button back to where it belongs…Whew!! what a mouthful!
Did that make any sense?

Good luck.
SCOTT

Thanks for the info on the disappearing buttons, Scott. And let me add my public congrats on the new baby.

More fine tuning on my Frankenstein head before I start adding texture. I’m not sure what the best way to add the hair would be. Any suggestions?

Nice. Several techniques for hair exist, including adding extra geometry from torus’ modded.

Here are a couple of ideas that might get you going
