CG Talk's "The journey begins"..........

They’s just announced the winners for CG Talk’s “The journey begins” challenge for the 2D and 3D entrants.

The 2D entrys were great, but the 3D winners ( in my oppinion ) was upside down. There was a lot of great work that didn’t even get hororable mention and good luck trying to go back and find them because CG Talk deleted a lot of the entries ( ? ).

I’m not upset because I didn’t win because I wasn’t expecting to because this was my first challenge and I’m still learning, but sheesh I have no idea what the judges were thinking.
I can’t help but think of what was going through their minds in this process. I’m just sadly disappointed with the results which was in my oppinion, bad judging. Suffice to say this is my first and last challenge that I will enter.

I just wish I could post links to some of the great art that was entered, but like I said, CG Talk deleted a lot of the entrys except for the first 3 pages.

The entry’s are not deleted. They just become hidden if they are inactive after 30 days. I kind of agree with you there. Some of my favorites didn’t make it and others didn’t do as well as I thought.

You’re right, I didn’t know that it hid old posts like that.
Anyway, here’s one example of what I’m talking about. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT THIS ENTRY DIDN’T EVEN RECIEVE AN HONORABLE MENTION!!!
HERE

Even if it for some reason didn’t fit the criteria ( which I wouldn’t know why ) such a beautiful work of art like this should at least have recieved some type of recognition!! Such talent… If I was this guy I would would be shaking my head while scratching it at the same time.

What surprising end to the contest…

Wasn’t too happy with the results myself. But hey, art and contests don’t go well together, as art triggers each individual in a different way. One good thing about such a challenge with such a good theme is that it produces so much beautiful works. I hope I get good enough to make an entry somewhere along the long, looong road.

Personally I think the artwork shown deserves it’s places in any case. None of my personal fav’s has shown up however… In any case… compared to the shiny sphere with a checkerboard floor from a few years ago… The resluts in general are taking my breath away!

MYTHOLON has Lemo’s #1 Spot.

Yes I agree with you whole heartedly, and don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of beautful work done for this competition.
I knew as well going into this that I wouldn’t win cause I’m still learning and there’s some real pro’s that were competing as well. I did it for the sheer enjoyement and competition as well as the comradery. At the same time though you have to admit that the end result seems a bit upside down when you compare all the entrys together.
Part of the competiton guidelines was that the main character/s of your scene has to be up close while being able to see far off into the distance. The first place winner ( as great as his piece was ) didn’t follow those guidelines and still won?!
It just makes me further question the consistancy and professionalism of the judges at CG Talk.

It seems that the rules can be bent. I guess I will have to do some rule bending next time around.

I too am totally surprised every time as to why they pick the winners that they do, i mean some are nice to look at for a few seconds but there were only one or two that i thought touched an emotional chord. i really liked the one with the sad dragon, no honorable mention for that. also i agree with that the rules were not followed for that no1 piece.
also were there enough ballons in this challenge, yeesh.

Yep, I know what you mean. I tried to voice my oppinion on the voting and how the judges voted, yet I have not nor will I ever recieve a legitimate answer to my valid questions. I just mostly got ignored or flamed in the forum.
I wasn’t griping cause I lost, I stated more than once that I knew that I would lose going into the contest. I did it for the fun and challenge.

One thing that I can say is this. Not only would this have effected me, but probably many more that entered the challenge that if we knew then what we know now, the appearance of our projects and the voting results would have been entirely different.

My whole simple point was that we all read the rules and guidelines when we entered the challenge. Me, as well as many others were careful as well to follow them and create a scene that looked the best and best followed those guidelines.
I just asumed that those same rules and guidelines would also be applied to the judging. The only judge that “somewhat” responded to my question said that some judges ( to paraphrase ) interpreted the rules and guidelines in a different “sense” than literal.
Very strange. To me, 55 mph means 55 mph. Not 20 or 100 mph. Those rules and guidelines were pretty clear…well, to me anyway.
