Captain Maynard

I started this morning with one of my old 3dsmax meshes that was gathering dust and ran it throught the zbrush wonder machine. My wife thinks I’m completely obsessed with sculpting in Z and she’s right. It’s just too damn fun. I got lazy with his outfit and clothing detail which will come together eventually.
I used displacement maps from Z on the lowpoly mesh in MAX, slapped together some MR skin shader and textures, added some basic eyes and used this model to try out MAX8 hair for the first time.

Here’s the progress:

Great texturing! You’d never guess it was the same model as in your second post. :+1:

-updated skin texture and shader
-working on jacket and shirt
-tweaking facial hair, still looks a bit weird in places

Dear Sean, I really like your captain:D :sunglasses: :+1:

(my small opinion: try to take the bart from the first version and put it in your last render… for me is the first better)

Hey Sean,
This is looking really good, but I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind showing a small image of what the Max geometry looked like before the ZBrushing. It’d be a great display of what ZBrush does for traversed models (plus I’m just curious).
I’m digging the SSS. Keep Z’ing.

Abyssis-thanks, I like the old beard too. I need to spend more time and figure out MAX hair/fur to make it better

zChaz-I’ll post the base mesh when I get back from San Fran,

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Eat well and be lazy all day.

-updated the skin shader
-lighting using an HDRI image on the skylight
-added a secondary light for sharp shadows and speculars

maynard05_face.jpg

Cool nice render. However your latest one with the hdri image for skylighting - the skin shader looks too shiny i think making it look abit like wax unless that was what you was going for. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sean,
I agree that it’s looking wax-like, BUT, it’s still f’ing kewwwllllll! I love the direction it’s going. I hope to see more soon.

-added some more skin pore details, helps to break up the specular detail
-more detail on the skin texture
-shaved some of the wax off

maynard06_face.jpg

-specular adjustment
-back to playing with facial hair using MAX Hair

maynard07_face.jpg

-more facial hair work, stylin with the mutton chops!
-minor eye tweaks

update:
fixed eye ambient
more skin tweaking

Thanks SubDivMe for the shader help!

Nice work!

I’m not in love with the eyes. Is the ambience too high?

VeryGrimm,

Yeah my eye ambient was a bit too high. Just fixed in the above image.

Nice work Sean! The hair is looking great.:+1: IMHO: Shouldn’t there be some discoloration in his skin (red in the nose, plum around the eyes, etc.,)? Just a thought…
Can’t wait to see more,

Hey :>,

its really cool char - like his beart and eyes!

i really like how this picture turned out. I think it is the best version yet. I was wondering though: there is something funny about the eyes. It seems like they aren’t aligned correctly. Or are you purposefully having one eye looking straight ahead and one looking at a slight angle?

Also, will you be giving more definition to the neck? It looks like it is in the early stages of painting. Unlike the definition of the face.

Keep up the good work!
