Can't type any text in ZB 2018!

I thought I’d try out using the text plugin in ZB 2018 and when I clicked on the new text button and the text field showed up, I couldn’t type a single thing. No keys worked except the ESC key. I had this exact problem with renaming subtools back in 4r8 but I kind of ignored it because I never really heeded to rename my subtools.

All my hotkeys work normally. It just goes blank when it come to text fields.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Hey! I had this same problem recently. i sent a ticket to support and this is what they replied. let me know if this helps.

"Thank you for using ZBrush!

What I would like you to do is please first check to ensure that Windows is not performing high DPI scaling on ZBrush. Right-click the ZBrush 4R8 desktop shortcut and choose Properties. On the Compatibility tab, there is a checkbox for high DPI scaling. That box should be checked to be on and make sure it’s set to “Application” then close that window. This will ensure that ZBrush has full control over its own scaling."

Thanks for that info. Unfortunately, those settings are greyed out for me. I have no idea why but nothing I do makes those settings available. I’ll have to look into the issue and see what I have to do to make the settings available.

I appreciate your help.

Cheers,
Paul

Hey inkman002,

I managed to change the settings via regedit but even then Zbrush wouldn’t even allow me to type anything. I can’t even see any text in any of the text fields. I don’t know, maybe it might have something to do with me having Windows 8 (not 8.1). It just seems like a strange thing not to work.

Weird?

Thanks anyway, though.

I hope that someone can shed some light on this issue.

“I managed to change the settings via regedit”

How did you do that mix-mash? I’m having the same issue in that I can’t rename subtools in ZBrush 2018 (works fine in 4R8) and the Compatibility settings are greyed out.

Hi Dillster,

Firstly, you go to your desktop shortcut for ZB2018 and in the Compatibility tab, check “Run as Admin”. This will flag it so you can find it in Regedit. If you don’t do this, there will be no entry that you can modify in Regedit.

Then in Regedit, you go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers and find the ZB2018 entry then right-click it and select to modify it.

You should have something that says “~ RUNASADMIN”. Just change that to “~ RUNASADMIN ~ HIGHDPIAWARE”. Then click OK, get out of Regedit and try if it works.

I basically got it from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH9jyP5qiHo

It didn’t work for me, sadly, but hope it works for you.

Paul

Thanks Paul, I will try that tonight after work.

Does Ctrl+V work for paste? In other words, can you type into Notepad and then copy and paste into ZBrush? This is certainly an odd problem.

Nothing works when the text field pops up for anything. I can’t see the initial text (for when I try to rename subtools) and the field is blank grey. Nothing from the right click menu works either. The only thing I can do is press ESC to cancel the text field.

No that doesn’t work Marcus, thanks. I tried Paul’s regedit tip but that didn’t work either. Like Paul, my subtool rename field is blank (ie the existing subtool name not showing in the rename edit box). I should mention that the issue is only happening on my Windows 7 PC at home, it doesn’t happen on my Windows 8.1 PC at work.

For now I’ve taken to opening my projects in 4R8, renaming the subtools there and then reopening them in 2018.

Try this plugin, it might just help. It creates a Windows text dialog to enter the text. With a bit of luck you will be able to rename SubTools, layers and Transpose Units. (I couldn’t get it to work with the 3D Text plugin, sadly.)

Installation

  1. Close ZBrush.
  2. Extract the Zip file. Open any containing folder created by the unzipping.
  3. Copy the TextEntry.zsc file and TextEntryData folder to the Pixologic/ZBrush 2018/ZStartup/ZPlugs64 folder.
  4. Restart ZBrush.

There should now be a new “Text Entry” sub-palette in the Zplugin palette.
There will be three buttons - for renaming a SubTool, renaming a Layer and changing the Transpose Units.

HTH,

Thanks, Marcus, that works beautifully! There is still the matter of the “text 3d and vector shape” plugin which was one of the main reasons for my post. There might also be other plugins with text entry that I haven’t even used yet. But, what you have done is awesome nonetheless.

I’m hoping to make a small tutorial for the “text 3d and vector shape” plugin in the near future so getting things to work properly would be good for me eventually.

I’m still puzzled as to why something as simple as text entry is not working in 2018.

Anyway, thanks again, Marcus!

Those features seem to work fine in Windows Home Premium, maybe try compatibility mode for it?

Sadly, changing the compatibility mode did nothing for the issue.

Thanks anyway, Doug.

Thank you very much for your text plugin Marcus, it works perfectly like all your other plugins!

You’re welcome guys. It’s only a workaround. I hope this problem will be fixed in a future ZBrush version.

Marcus, I was just wondering as to how you overrode the text field prompt with your plugin?

I mean, is it possible to do it so that it works for ANY text field for any plugin? IE globally

Is it possible to have a plugin such as this work permanently in the background or, by activating it first, just before you want to input text into a text field?

I’m just curious if you could do something like this with your plugin.

Thanks for your time and help so far, by the way.

Paul

Sorry about the bump ;-(

Hi there, just found this Thread. I am having the same problem, everything works fine except the renaming. As soon as I click the rename button the renaming field pops up and then nothing. All I hear is a peep but no letter or anything. Even ESC dont work for me. So I am going to try that text entry link i found here (thank you for that) and/or the ZScene Manager. Btw. I am on Windows 7 here, maybe thats the problem but that would be very weird.
Maybe someone else finds a solution and let us know :o I really would appreciate it very much since it drives me nuts.

Disable all compatibility DPI scaling. Right-click the icon, go to Properties → Compatibility → Change High DPI Settings. Make Sure both boxes are unchecked in the pop-up window.
Next, open Windows Settings (Win + I). Type “DPI” in the search box, and select “Change the size of text, apps and other items”. Scroll Down to “Scale and Layout”, and set the window scaling value to 100%.
The gotcha is that the scaling is disabled universally, so all your apps will appear smaller. You could try changing the display resolution to increase the size of everything on screen…
