Cant show zoom out to full document resolution

Hey guys,

Long time visitor, but not so much posting.

I’m having a problem with Zbrush 3.1. I’m trying to get a render of my document at a large enough resolution to print with (8.5 x 11) without any aliasing. So heres the deal…

I change my document resolution to 8000 x 6000 (maximum?) and zoom out as far as Zbrush will let me. I then draw in my model and scale it so it fills the entire viewport. But then when I open that document in Photoshop the model is small and in the middle of the image with a lot of blank canvas on all sides. The part of the image with my model only ends up being about 2000 pixels across.

As far as I’ve been able to tell there is no button or hotkey to view the full canvas is that right? Zbrush wont let me zoom out any more even though I’m nowhere near the edge of the canvas.

I’ve got a pretty beefy rig (quad core, 8 gigs of ram) so I can’t imagine it being a performance issue although I’m not sure.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

if you use Zapplink you can store a location of your model in relation to the canvas.

so if you set your canvas for say. 800x600 and then make the model take up that space. Then store that view in a custom view for Zapplink.

change the document size to 8kx6k and put the model back on the canvas, go into edit mode, then apply the custom view you just stored. That will/should make your model take up the same space as it did when the canvas was small enough for you to work at.

If you don’t have Zapplink, it’s in the DL center. The options for Zapplink are located inside the document panel.

I hope that helps.

If this limitation is true, you should add it to the Z4 wishlist.

goast666,

I tried your advice with ZappLink and it worked great. Thanks a ton!

Yeah, it’s a real limitation(in 3.1 anyways)…Zbrush 3.1’s “support” for ultra high res docs near the upper limit in 3.1 is theoretical at best. For what it is worth, this limitation appears gone in 3.5, though 3.5, at present, doesnt have the benefit of all the useful 3.1 plug ins.

As a print illustrator though, I would volunteer that 8000x 6000 is waaaaaaaay bigger than you need for an 8.5 x 11 document for most printing processes. 300 dpi (adequate or better for nearly all traditional printing processes) for 8.5 x 11 would be 2550 x 3300, a much more manageable size. Even if you wanted to then Double that size so you could export it at half size AA that's still smaller than what you're doing, and when working for print at high resolution that is not really necessary...print has a natural AA effect that would make that overkill. AS long as the resolution is high enough (like, at 300 dpi), what you might perceive as minor jaggies on a monitor will look fine on paper. Chances are, if you sent an 8000 rez document to a printer for an 8.5x11 print, they would just downsize it anyways to make it more manageable on their end.
