Cant see a DFX object

I wonder if any computer gurus out there would know why my paint program which can import DFX cannot see a DFX object exported from ZBrush. I’ve tried exporting in QUAD and TRI. But neither are recognised. It’s an old paint program has the specifications to DFX changed?

I think there are two kinds of DFX files, 2D and 3D. Maybe they are related in some way, I don’t know. I think 2D DFX files are vector graphics.

It is a 3D paint program for real time texturing similar to TextureMaster. Although it is quite old it goes way back to the dark days of '96

Oh, guess that isn’t it then. Can this program work with objs? I think they are more suited to texturing work.

Hi thelonious,

Sounds like you may be using a 4D Paint (who later became Right Hemisphere) program? As far as I know the DXF format was updated last time . . . guessing . . . 8-12 years ago. What most likely is happening is the faces are “flipped” as far as the older program is concerned. Normally you would still be able to see part of the object (it’s back faces) unless the program was smart enough to ignore the back faces. The older program may have a flip face option or try activating the “Flip” modifier in the tool palette before exporting to DXF from ZB.

good luck

Hi Impending,

Sorry I was not clear enough. What I meant by “cannot see” is that when I try to import the ZBrush DFX it does not show up in the dialogue box. I’m on a mac.

I’m using, (or not using more to the point) Fractal Design, Detailer 1.0, I don’t think they ever made any other version. They later went on to become Meta Creations.

Every few months I wheel this program out and try to make it work. I can’t get any support as Meta sold all their products and I don’t think Detailer still exists, which is a shame because it looks awesome. It has all the painter brushes for painting in real time while updating brushstrokes in another real time window as a texture. But alas I cannot get it to import anything from ZB

I don’t know how it works on a Mac, but in Windows you can type in “.” and the Open box will show you all files, whether the program can open them or not. If the Mac has something like this it might help.
Just throwing suggestions out, maybe it is case sensitive? Can it open DFXs from other programs correctly?

Hey I thought you may have cracked it there Muvio, I saved something from amapi in DXF and it appeared in the detailer import window. So I changed the ZBrush DFX to lower case dfx just like the amapi object but although it could see the amapi object it still could not see the ZBrush object.

So now I know it must be something to do with ZBrush.

I’ve just done some more tests. I created a letter shape in Amapi and exported as a dfx. I was able to open this dfx in both Detailer and ZBrush. However when I re-exported the object from ZBrush it would not open back in Detailer
