Cant sculpt original geomtry after adding a layer ?

HI, Ive scuplted my character in Zbrush 4 to a certain finished level with no layers, but I now want to add fine skin details on a few seperate layers.

So Ive created a new layer and added my first details but when I finish with that new layer and stop recording and then want to make changes and carry on sculpting on the original geometry it wont let me and I get the message
“mesh has deformation(shape) layers. Turn off ZAdd/Zsub draw modes or activate layer-recording mode and try again” ?

So I basically cannot not make any changes to my character now without baking the layer down, but I dont want to do that!:confused:… any ideas ?

ok, so i figured out the problem, you have to turn the newly created layers off to carry on making changes to the orginal mesh… this is dissapointing as Id like to keep the layers visible whilst making other changes.:confused:
