Can't Get My Sub Divisions to Save

Well just like the title indicates, after exporting my sculting I can never get the lower subdivisions to export with it. Is there a procces that I am missing here? What I have been doing to save me sculpted object is to export the object as a .OBJ tool and then later import it for later work, when I bring it back I only have the highest subdivision of geometry not any lower subdivisions.

Well if anyone has a solution for this I would love to hear it.

Thanks again!
Josh

Save as a native ZTool object until final work is done. Then create your hi res model if you are going to i to import the high res model directly into your 3d app for rendering. Otherwise, create a displacement or normal map to then add the detail onto a low poly or subdivision model.

The online manual can explain it better than I can. It’s a great place to start!

Yep. The OBJ format itself does not support multiresolution mesh editing. So if you export, you lose your levels. To keep your levels, you always need to use ZBrush’s native ZTL format. So press Tool>Save As instead of Tool>Export.

If you are exporting and importing using your highest sub division level, when you bring it back into zbrush, try hitting the ‘reconstruct subdivision’ button. With each press it will recreate one level below the current level. Although, as stated above, this is not the best workflow…

Thanks guys I really appreciate the input! Has already started to help me out.

Thanks everyone,
Josh

Although it is not best work around, occasionally I do this in order to keep the highest level of detail as insurance. While moving the mesh in and out of ZB (im/export), it corrupted partially and left no clue how to fix it. Then just bring the highest level mesh into the troubling mesh then apply switch geometry… as long as the # of poly is acceptable level for the machine…

Yeah that does sound like a pretty resonable backup option, the hardware im running can take a pretty decent amount of poly stress.

What I nornally do for my backups is make interval saves and duplicate saves to ensure I haven’t botched my WIP.

Thanks again!
