cannot subtract

Hi,
I am trying to cut a hole with various brushes but all is happening is adding to the mesh… I choose curve line tool, z-sub is selected, I draw on the dynamesh sphere and ctrl-click twice on the empty part of the canvas but it always adds, what gives?
(It is not only the curve line but insert cylinder brush also works the same way)
Cheers.

Things may not always be as intuitive as you wish.

Yes, you are right, nothing seems intuitive at all.
But all I’m trying to do is this:

But with me it is all additive, cannot subtract at all.

Thanks for your input, nonetheless.

To do it with negative inserts like in that video is quite simple. Use your insert brush, hold down alt while you insert the mesh into an active dynamesh object to make it a negative sub, ctrl drag in empty canvas once to clear the mask, then once again to remesh. Easy peasy. If you’re not getting that to work for you something in your procedure is wrong (likely), or something is amiss with your geometry (uncommon).

For subtraction with merged subtools, please follow these instructions exactly:

http://docs.pixologic.com/user-guide/3d-modeling/modeling-basics/creating-meshes/dynamesh/with-subtools/

A couple key points: The target mesh must be of higher polygon count than the subtrative mesh, and when merging subtools, the target mesh subtool must be active and merged down on top of the subtractive.

Please keep in mind that that video you’re watching is several program versions out of date.

many thanks,
the problem might be the tablet as the alt button misbehaves quite regularly. I could subtract in the morning but somehow it stopped working in the afternoon. Maybe I have to delete the prefs and look into it later on.
Cheers.
