can you Or wouldn't it be cool if you could polypaint in layers, like PS ?

I have been doing a bit of polypainting lately. It occurred to me that much of this could be made easier with painting in layers. Imagine you lay down a layer for veins, then 3 different layers for skin colors. Looking at it later you think, hey I dont like the look of the vein layer, or maybe I should have painted a musculoskeletal layer beneath the skin layers.
With paint layers yo could go back. Move layers around or add in an additional layer. Or even better, apply a transparency operation to only certain sections of you top paint layer…

To my understanding this is not currently possible. Or am I wrong?

Awesome! Thank you Doug ! I have a question about polypainting if you don’t mind. Is there a way to blend, blur smudge paint as you go? I have tried to use shift key, but without add turned on, it dose nothing. I don’t want to effect any geometry, just the paint.
