Can you import models with textures into Zbrush??

Hello there! See if you can help me out with this one: I need to make a high-res version of a low-poly model in Zbrush, but this model already has textures that the high-res version has to follow. (For example, ridges and cracks)

Is there any way of importing the model with textures from MAX and see them in Zbrush??

I know that’s not the best way to proceed in the first place, but it’s a bit late for that, hehe.

Thanks for your help!!

Yes. You can apply your texture to the model in ZBrush. Simply load the model and draw it on the canvas. Enter Edit mode. Import the texture into the Texture palette and flip it vertically. It will now wrap correctly onto the model.

The catch is that each model can only have one texture applied to it. So if your model uses multiple textures you will probably want to bring each part into ZBrush separately.

Thanks, aurick, but the problem is the model doesn’t seem to keep the original UV layout from MAX. Instead, Zbrush seems to give it a new layout, where all the faces are mapped in a grid of little triangles. (Kinda like a grid split in tris)

Am I exporting it all wrong? Then again, the DXF exporter doesn’t give me any options, and OBJs don’t import well into Zbrush. Is there a way to stop Zbrush from giving models a new UV layout?

Anyway, thanks in advance.

It sounds like you are missing a setting when exporting from Max. ZBrush should not alter the UVs upon import.

The following threads might help you:

You can also take a look at the Other Apps: What advice can you give for 3D STUDIO MAX? thread in the F.A.Q Forums.

If increasing the # of Digits in the export settings does not help you can try doing a Reset XForm in Max and then export again (Still with # of Digits set to at least 6)

MAX2OBJ shreds my UV coordinates

Love your Past and Future sculpture and the Demon bust looks great too. Is it rendered with normal maps?

Thanks, TVeyes! The “Max to ZBrush to Max” thread solved my problem. It seems DXFs don’t carry my texture coordinates correctly, but OBJ does. Many many thanks for the help!

I’m glad you like my sculpture. And yes, the demon bust is rendered with normal maps. I would have liked to have a high-res model render aswell. I might still do that, actually.
