Can only select/edit bottom layer

I’m kind of new at this, trying to create my first complex model using layers. I’ve found that, as i create new layers on my ztool, I can no longer edit or even select any of the previous ones. I can turn them on or off, no problem, but I can no longer draw on them. I understand that there can only be one active layer at a time, but I can’t seem to pick which layer should be active. it seems only the last one created can be active.

What am I missing or doing wrong? This can’t be the standard behavior. At first I thought it must be some kind of file corruption, so then I tried it with a simple sphere with the same results.

I’m using Zbrush 3.2 with MacOS 10.6.1.

Layers are dependent on subdivision level. So if you make a layer on subdivision level 4, for instance, you can’t edit it on any other level.

This limitation is because layers are merely organized morph targets.

You can have many layers on a subdivision level. They are great for non destructive sculpting and adding certain details. For instance, I made a fish and put all the scales on a layer on the highest subdiv. Afterwards, I could adjust the intensity of them easily with the slider.

Take note that if you delete the layer when the eye is on, you commit the layer to the actual mesh at that subdiv level. If you delete it when the eye is off, then you actually delete it.

Thanks, I appreciate your input, but the problem I was having was a typical noob mistake. Apparently, in order to switch the ‘active’ layer, all the layers need to be made invisible and deselected. Then (and ONLY then, apparently) you can choose an active layer by clicking on the eyeball. The layer then becomes both visible AND active. The other layers can then be made visible if you choose, but not active. If you want to switch the active layer, then again, all layers need to be made invisible and deselected… etc. There’s probably a good reason for this, but it’s likely way over my head.

Quite a few hoops to jump through when apps like Photoshop have set a precedent wherein simply clicking on a layer in the layer palette makes it active (unless it’s locked).
