I imported my mesh, and i have it in half so i can divide it more times, is there a way i can mirror it, so when i do something to one side it updates on the other? in maya its called instance duplicate, in wings3d virtual mirror, something like that?
ZBrush is optimized for extremely high poly modeling, so it is not normally necessary to use such a feature. It’s best to work with a whole object and Transform>Symmetry active. Use masking to selectively divide the mesh.
If you wish to work with only one half, there is a way. What you would have to do is Tool>Inventory>Clone your model and then use the mirror deformer on the clone. Next use an offset modifier. Draw it on the canvas and place a marker. Select the other half and use the marker to draw it. The use the Move gyro to move it into position in relation to the original half. You can use the Transform>Info to exactly position it. Place a marker for this half, then clear the canvas. Now use the MultiMarker tool to draw both halves together and make a composite mesh. The catch with this technique is that if you wish to use the model in another program you’ll also have to weld the edges.
Hope that helps!
What Aurick suggested could work, but I wouldn’t recommend it at all. You’d end up with and atrocious seem down the middle of your object, and if you’re scuplting, then there is no way you can guarantee that the seem will not move from the centered axis.
What I would do is, if you must create geometry in Maya first, then mirror that geometry, and attach them together by combining them. and merging the verteces. Expot that out, and import it into Zbrush.
Then, all you have to do in Zbrush is click on the x button in the transform pallete. This will allow you to model mirror style like you can in Wings and Maya. You may have to flip the geometry, or just shift snap the model to face the direction you want.
This is the method I use to model in Zbrush. I think it works effectively. You can check out a little tutorial on how I model if you’d like. It’s a zscript, so you can watch as I work.
