I like what I see, but can you do a render that’s a bit lighter (maybe up the ambient light or global illumination), so we can see that sweet man-eating plant in all it’s glory.

this is a test render) something not there

Cool plant! Looks like the start of a great scene.

I’m a beginner at 3D but have been an artist since the age of 9. My terminology may be wrong but I’ll try.

The material settings for both the cave and the plant(?) look about the same. That causes the elements of the scene to blend rather than stand out. I find that realism can be best achieved through complexity; both in the texture and the material. It’s all about perception. I would expect the plant to have more gloss and reflection than the rock. It would also be translucent where the rock would be opaque. In my experimenting in various programs I’m finding I often disable AA to objects like rock walls, bricks and the like and I get a more realistic look and feel. AA is not always the right approach. One thing I think that gets overlooked in 3d renders is that in the real world all surfaces have at least some reflectivity. It’s nearly imperceptible but our eye notices it if it is missing. Another important thing is noise so small that its barely perceptible and corresponding bump. Your eye does not pick up the detail but it makes a dramatic difference in perception. I’m not familiar with Shake so I can’t be much help there.

I’m guessing the Shake render is your intended composition and my eye is drawn to the dark cave opening by the lines of the scene. A different POV placing the cave opening behind the head of the plant might make a dramatic difference by drawing your eye to it.

Your image is so dark in the post I could not make it out. You may need to calibrate your monitor. I do mine monthly with a Spyder2 Pro so I should be seeing what most others do. I hope you don’t mind as I took the exposure up a couple of steps. The second image is to show what I mean about where the eye is drawn too. If you were to change the POV to put the cave opening centered behind the head of the plant I think the difference would be worth the effort. Other than that I’d vary the specular on the plant with a map and add more reflection and translucence (SSS) of some sort to help it stand out.

You might also go for a little more contrast between the color of the background and the plant.

You might want to do a search and try some of Jantims materials as they demonstrate what complexity can do for realism. Jantim has a great eye for mat’s and they are worth studying.

Thank you very much Masters PB for replying!!!

Sometimes it helps to lay it aside and just start something new. Inspiration will strike you eventually and then you work on the old piece again. My advice is to simply play with a new project. Why don’t you work a bit on a few projects from the free ZBrush Guide?

PS:I have a LOT of ‘unfinished’ things. They wait for better skills or the delete button hahaha. Good luck!

I like where you are heading.
Lemo gives good advice.

thank you guys!!!
