Hi there, I’ve been using a trial version and working at a friends’ so far, and am now thinking of buying myself Zbrush as I’ve managed some money on the side. So my question is when to buy? Buy Zbrush 3 and get a free upgrade for zbrush 4 when it comes out, or wait for Zbrush 4? Will there be a price variation between 3 and 4? And will the free zbrush 4 free upgrade be the same as Zbrush 4 standalone?

Zbrush has always provided upgrades free of charge to registered owners. The upgrade from 3.1 to 3.5 is free. There is no guarantee written in stone that this will always be the case that I am aware of, but I think you should feel comfortable buying Zbrush at any time. The purchase price of Zbrush does increase from time to time.
[Edit] Betting on the release date of a new ZB version is always a dicey proposition. You could be waiting some time for ZB 4.

Why wouldn’t it. ZBrush 4 is ZBrush 4 whether you upgrade or purchase it for the first time? It has for previous versions.
The risk with waiting is that version 4 would be an ideal opportunity for the price to rise, given that it is a new release rather than just a point upgrade.
