Brush snapping problem (rotating object instead of working on mesh)

Hi there, my first post in here. Actually my second, but I was logged out automatically while writing, and it was all lost when I pushed “back”. So a little angry…:stuck_out_tongue:

When I brush on my model, and I am in a lower level of sDiv, my brush will not always snap to nearest vertex (due to big faces), but instead rotate the model. A pain in the ass, actually. I have made video to show it too you. In the video the ikon of the brush won’t change to the rotation-ikon, but it does in the software itself.

My expert friend can´t recreate the problem on his machine… Whereas I can create it very easily. The faces doesn´t have to be very big, before I can find areas between vertices, where I can rotate.

I just want to rotate when in the area surrounding the model, and if anyone knows the solution to this, I will be very…joyfull, I guess.

In the video I am not making anything, only showing my point. At one point I suddenly work on the front of the mesh, which very clearly shows the problem. I didn´t rotate the model intentionaly, it just happend because I brushed a little too fast, and suddenly hit a “rotation” area on the mesh…

Please give me answers…

The key point is the center of the editing brush. If the exact center of the brush is over any portion of the model’s polygons, it will snap right to a point. But if the exact center of the brush is just off the surface, no point will be snapped to.

It sounds like you’re starting your brush stroke while the center of the cursor isn’t quite over the surface of the model.

Load the PolyCube model and go to subdivision level 1 or 2 to experiment a bit. You’ll quickly get the hang of it. Also, there’s a nice visual cue to let you know what’s going to happen at any given time: When you’re not snapped to a point the center of the cursor is a rotation icon. When you are snapped to a point it changes to a cross hair.

as you can see in the video, my brush is in the middle of the mesh. It´s not like something that just happen out of nowhere. As long as the sDiv level is low (polys are big), I can rotate the model, even though my brush is directly on the mesh. just have to place it in the middle of a poly, and it will not snap to any vertex.

Anyways, I updated to version 3.1, had waited with that because of a little too many bad posts about it in here (crashes etc.) and it works fine in here. In v. 3.1 I simply, no matter how much I try, and how big the polys are, find any areas where I can rotate the model. So, problem solved, somewhat.

I found this new sub menu within the preferences menu; “Edit”, in which I can control some sort of “vertex snap” threshold. And that sounds like what I needed in version 3.0. But no matter how high I set this threshold, I still can´t recreate the original problem, so I´m not sure if this is what does the trick.

But it works in 3.1, and that is what matters…:+1:

This is a classic example of why it’s important to include all pertinent info when submitting a troubleshooting post. If you had said in the first place that you were still using 3.0 we could have told you right away to update to 3.1 for your solution.
