Breaking into film CG or game development as a modeler

Its been a while since ive posted. I’m wondering if you guys can lend some advise about breaking into film CG or game development as a modeler.

A bit of background: I’ve been in the toy industry as a free lance sculptor, model maker, prototyper, CAD and digital specialist for the last 15 years. I do all my work digitally and CNC mill (in toy sculpting wax) all sculpts models and parts. The final product is always a wax sculpt or molded cast copy. The digital file is just the means to get the final sculpt, it is not textured or painted “it dose not matter”! I work mostly in Rhino & Lightwave for the majority of the work ive done. I do use ZBrush but not all that much so far. I’ve played with Maya but not enough to jump in and use it efficiently. I also use Solidworks.

I also worked in Make up effect for film for over 12 years. 1987- 2000.

Since all the digital is turned into a real sculpt model or part I have very little to no experience texturing, painting, rigging, lighting, animation etc.

The image is a sample of some of my work. (all done digitally)

My Questions are this.

What do you really need to know to get in?

What portfolio items to I lack?

Do I need a animated reel?

What programs are being used out there? What to focus on? Is Maya the basis of most company’s?

Any input on Gnomon? I was thinning about taking the Maya texture mapping course.
