Braids (hair)

I’ve made this pose-able hair model (for Poser) using Carrara 1.1. People have been asking for braided hair to go with it. Had no idea how I was going to do it, but started playing with ZSpheres yesterday. Wahoo! It worked, like a charm. Did one set of braids, so the strands finished in the same x,y co-ordinates as they started, then copied and joined sections together in Carrara. Now all I’ve got to do is rig and texture it. Yay! The pic below only shows a small part of the braid, cos it’s very long. I’ll attach a couple of pics of the hair too, so you can see how long it’ll be. The lower two pics are done in Poser using standard models … not mine. The hair’s all mine though. Thank you ZBrush!!

haha very cool Moochie,

looks like you are having a ball with this too! That’s always fun to follow!!

Can’t wait to see some end pics!

Hey, I found you! Can’t wait till you get a chance to work more on this.

awsome!, how u did it? im trying to do brides for a rasta model i did the last week but i cant find the way to do it. whats your method?
again, cool suff m8.

This great. I have those braids for Poser too! How are you making them since I still for the life of me cannot create anything propwise in Poser, and now that I have P6, I need to trying again real soon.

If you have a different 3d program like 3dsmax or Lightwave, try my tutorial. I actually wrote this in 2001 then Newtek made a video tutorial using almost the exact same technique. It would have been nice to get some credit as my tutorial has been advertised on a popular tutorial site for ages…

These are tutorials for Lightwave (and one or two for photoshop) but you can work things out. Also you might find the other tutorials useful.

Have fun!

Thanks for the links Revanto. The only braids I’ve seen before were painted onto flat geometry or a cylinder was modelled into an approximation of braids. That was how I assumed I’d have to do it, until I started messing around with ZSpheres. I’m sure this must have been done before, but it’s always cool to ‘discover’ techniques for oneself even if they’re not new. Yay!

Simple enough … three strands with enough spheres to allow one entire iteration of the braid pattern. Then keep turning the model and moving the spheres as if you were actually plaiting someone’s hair … you know … over and under and all that. Once you’ve got the first set done, take the mesh into your other 3D prog and copy and loft until it’s the length you require.

that’s cool… gives me new ideas… thnx fo sharing, Moochie

This can be accomplished in similar fashion by taking the zsphere object and turning it in the TOOL>PRIEVIEW window until the top is facing you. Then just use TOOL>DEFORMATIONS>TWIST to twist the fibres.
