Bizarre Scale and Symmetry problem

I’m using a base mesh built in Maya, which is behaving very well in ZBrush.
There is one thing that is just not working though, and I’ve never had this problem before which is what leads me to believe it might be a Maya thing.

When I try to scale the models arms ( see image below) using either the transform bars or using the “size” deformer the arms seem to repel away from the centre of the model ( z?). This happens when I have symmetry turned ON. When I do them one at a time it works fine. Move and Rotate work just fine, and this is only happening on the arms.

I’m not a Maya modeller, and the base mesh was made by someone else. I had my brother, an expert modeler come in and destroy any tranformations that might be left over on the obj in Maya. Where does the problem lie?

Check out the image below to see what I’m talkin’ about.

I dont know if this will help… but I guess it may be worth a try. Unhide the model then try “Deformations: Uniform.” Could you let me know if this works or not?

i think if what vanrailey says doesn’t work then this is normal behaviour of usng the transpose in scale.
it scales out from the opposte end that your are dragging from so if you have the centered on your model then it makes sense that it will go from there. same with using size, that is working off the models pivot.
it would’ve helped to see where your transpose line was in your pic.
one more thing, if you want to do it the way that you are yes, turn sym off and mask off the other arm, do your scaling, then do a smart resym with scaled arm masked and it should fix the other side.

I tried Deformation: Unify…is that what you meant? In Z? or is there something in Maya? Didn’t work. Thanks though!

I did scale one arm and then resym’d the other, which worked, but I’d rather not have to deal with that if I don’t have to. I included an image below of where my transformation bars are.

this is normal, i think when sym is turned on its trying to average of a center point between the two so thats why you get the first effect.
you should make friends with resym, because there are many times you are going to need it. try to sculpt up close on a hand with both hands visible and see how much more difficult it is than just sculpting one hand visible and smart resymming the other.

Actually, that’s easy if you turn on Transform>Local.

thanks aurick, i know that, lol(only been using zbrush for 6yrs), but i was trying to make a point.

yea, I’ve been using it for over 5. It really sucks when someone makes assumptions on your skill level with one little simple question, doesn’t it.
