Best way to make a hollow mask from a head

Hello,

I’m quite new to Zbrush and I’m struggling with a problem. I sculpted a whole head and now I need to keep just a mask (like the plastic mask used for disguise) with as much details inside as outside. What is the best way ?

The eyes and nostrils should be open with holes.

Thanks!
Marine

The third video gives a very good explanation of the shell function, but watch the whole series, and you will learn a lot of useful techniques

Ok, thanks. This is indeed very useful. Unfortunately, I’m loosing all the details (particularly inside the mask). I can get it back outside by reprojecting them, but inside is very rough (although I did it with a high resolution dynamesh). Is there a way to get as much details inside as outside?

Thanks again,
Marine

One way may be to clone or duplicate the original head, and convert it to a dynamesh. Don’t worry about the eye or nostril holes for now. You can use the slice curve to separate the face into a separate polygroup. Control Shift click on the face to hide the rest of the head and click delete hidden in geometry. You should then have a face with the back filled in. Duplicate that face and it should be a new subtool below the original. Cou can move that back and scale it down a bit in deformation or the new size settings in geometry. Using transparency can really help while positioning. You can then activate the subtract setting on the new subtool. Select the original face subtool above, merge down, the control click to clear as you normally would with a dynamesh. That should hollow it out with an inverse surface. You can then use subtractive insert meshes to cut out the eyeholes and nostrils, or you can experiment with the new slice curve circle or lasso to knock them out.

There are probably a dozen different and better ways to achieve your objective, and figuring them out is confusing and frustrating at first, but becomes part of the fun as you become more practiced and familiar with the program. You will always learn something new everytime you open ZBrush, and remember, a wise fellow once said, if you are NOT confused, then you are probably NOT paying attention

Paint a mask, use extract, tinker with thickness setting to get desired object. Hit accept.

Thank you! This way worked just fine! Happy Christmas!
