best way of converting an image to 3D mesh

could anyone tell me the best way of converting an image to 3D mesh?

would i make the leaf into an alpha, then extract it?

You can certainly try it. Crank up the resolution in the alpha panel.

I divided the image plane till it was 600,000 active points. and then in the morph target, create DIFF mesh. but the edges were very fuzzy and the leaf was 2million active points. so i zremeshed it. and went down in size to 30,000. i smoothed out the edges and a bit of the detail. Only problem is the back is plane.

So use your image as a mask and pull out the veins with the standard brush, add clay, magnify or something. You may have to enable backface auto mask to help prevent bleed through.
