Best method for a sash creation

Hi,

I wanted to know if there was a better way of making a sash? I want to add the knot and hang more of it from the sash. Like a robe belt. Attached is my WIP. I was going to add a sphere and sculpt the knot but it looked stupid to me. Thanks

Hi @Space76Ghost!

Well, ultimately Zbrush is a sculpting program, so you would generally sculpt it into shape. I would approach it in the same way that you suggest, but I would probably start with a lower poly Extract, because it will be easier to make major changes to the form without distorting it. You can create this by either extracting from a lower poly piece of geometry to begin with, or you can use ZRemesher to simplify the current Extract.

So for a classic “sash” there would be maybe 4 general shapes involved–the wraparound belt, the knot, and one or two hanging pieces of material from the knot. It would be easier by far to work on all of these as separate meshes, then fuse them together as desired.

For the belt I would start with a lower poly piece of geometry, then use the Pinch brush at a reduced intensity and a wide radius to compress the shape as it approaches the the knot. I would subdivide that lower poly mesh a couple times, then use the “inflate” brush, and/or the Standard brush, also at a reduced intensity, to start adding the major shapes of the folds along the belt, smoothing and softening the edges as I go.

Once I have the major forms, I would subdivide further, and maybe use the Clay Tubes brush to start putting in finer wrinkles as desired, smoothing as I go.

Repeat the same general process for all of the shapes, then use Dynamesh to fuse them together, and touch up any areas where they join. ZRemesher can then be used to simplify the geometry again if desired. Remember to always use destructive operations on duplicate subtools, so you always have an original you can go back to if there’s an issue.
