Beowulf - the Video Interview

We’ve just had the opportunity to speak with some of the artists from Sony Pictures Imageworks and learn how ZBrush was used to create their epic CG movie, “Beowulf”. It’s really fascinating to learn how ZBrush made the Grendel character possible!

To watch the movie, go to the Pixologic Home Page and then click the “Watch Video” button in the banner. It’ll take a few minutes to load all the way, but is well worth the wait!

i want to know how to dragon was made!

That is a solid interview! Really inspirational work and you tell it like it is. Thanks for keeping it real =)
(no pun intended)

Realy inspirational.
Thank you very much!

yea !..it was really great !

More that, more that, more that…

Enjoyed it a lot…especially the line" we used it for guts and stuff".

thanks for the insight on such a great project.

Hmm, pretty much at the end of the interview, he was talking about interactive texturing and seeing the displacement map effects…

did he mean during painitng in real time ?

hmm, I don’t know that feature, or did I missunderstand ?

thx

i think what he means is that you can take the model to high polycount do all your detail work, and then texture and poly paint, matching the detail you’ve created. when your ready you take your low poly model and export it. you take your high poly detail and create a displacment map from that. and you export your texture that was created over the high detail. when combined in another app you are recreating all your detail and your textures over the low poly model, but you’ve already seen it in Zbrush as a complete painted model in real time.

Always intresting to hear how people use zbrush in their pipeline. Although the way he talks about just discovering zbrush is kind of weird for someone in the industry. I mean beowulf was released in 2007 and zbrush had been around for like 5 years by then.

Great stuff  :+1: :+1: thank you for wonderful insight info!

He was refering to the time when the first zbrush version appeared years ago not the Beowulf production here. He said that he tried it first back then and used it in production for the first time on Lion Witch and the Wardrobe which was in the works in early 2005…

Great interview guys - I really enjoyed Beowulf in 3d!

repoman, I am always shocked to find out how far behind in technology some people/companies are. It’s hard for most studios to adopt new technologies when their senior people have been there for 20 some years and are unwilling to do anything new. Some studios are still using redhat linux 3.0 for their core infrastructure and are having a hard time moving forward with new technology. It’s not that the artists don’t want to use the tools but the feeling that some people might lose job security.

I liked this interview because he talked about a modern workflow and the huge advantage to using the latest and greatest technology. Adopting new technology has its drawbacks but the advantages far outweigh them, as we all saw from Imagework’s quality in this film.

Awww yes, finally an interview of Beowulf on pixolator. Great stuff.

How true Kosher…Anyone still using Nurbs? Anyways, great work on Beowulf! Especially modelling and texturing / shading. Actually I quite enjoyed the film in an IMAX theatre. Really impressive!
